In this helpful and practical episode, we begin to explore non-violent communication and its techniques with special guest Rebecca Gonçalves.

After a seemingly hopeless conflict with a family member, Rebeca went to seek tools that could help her in the resolution of the conflict and the restoration of the relationship. She then accidentally bumped into a conflict resolution philosophy called non-violent communication (NVC for short), which was the greatest aiding catalyst for the resolution of the said conflict she was seeking to dissolve. Since then, for the past 6 years, she has been living by the NVC philosophy and applying its tools in her daily life and relationships. She has trained in NVC under one of Marshal Rosenberg’s left-hand people, and she has conducted NVC study groups as well as individual practices both in Brazil and in the Netherlands.

Nonviolent Communication (NVC in English or CNV in Portuguese) is a process of communication created by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg. With Nonviolent Communication we learn to hear our own deeper needs and those of others. Through its emphasis on deep listening—to ourselves as well as others— it has the potential to help us discover the depth of our own compassion. 

The intention is to be non-violent in our communication, both with the other person as well as ourselves. 

The process of NVC (or CNV in Portuguese) is one of creating a constructive dialogue between the two parties (or ourselves) which brings into awareness our personal needs (in relation to the area of conflict) and the other person needs and values. This provides an opportunity for common ground, highlighting each other's personal values and needs in the situation. 

Rebeca explains to us how to apply these 4 steps in our personal lives:

  1. Observe and recap. The NVC process begins with neutral observation. 
  2. Describe emotions, not positions. Talk feelings, not issues. 
  3. Identify needs. 
  4. Make a request.
